Best Wireless N Router

D-Link DIR-655

Best Wireless N Router: D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigagit RouterNothing is more frustrating than having a slow internet connection. Even with the high speed packages that ISPs are offering, you can still experience a sluggish connection if you don’t have the correct router. D-Link presented the DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router to consumers, which offered groundbreaking features such as 200 MHz routing speed and cutting edge wireless security. At around $90, the DIR-655 is more expensive than most basic routers, but the investment value that this particular unit possesses is its most prominent feature.

What's Good:

The strongest feature that the DIR-655 provides is the high level of speed it provides. With 200+ Mhz routing speed, and full Wireless N support, it is one of the faster routers on the market. It also performs well both in long-range and short-range locations, giving the user more mobility. The Linksys WRT310N matches the DIR-655 test speeds with similar results, but it also comes with an average price tag of $110. As far as routers go, $20 is too much of a price difference for features that are so similar.

What's Bad:

One desired feature that the DIR-655  lacks is Dual Band support. The Linksys WRT610N provides this feature and is able to simultaneously support computers using differing wireless frequencies. But, this is an important feature only if multiple users with differing frequencies are going to be using the same connection. Also, Dual Band support comes with a higher price tag, with the Linksys WRT610N costing around $150.

Why it's the Best:

Consumers looking for an inexpensive router might look at the Belkin F5D7230-4 and think it’s a great deal. It costs $40, almost half of the D-Link DIR-655, but it doesn’t provide any long term investment value because both the speed, frequency, and support will be obsolete in the near future. Instead of paying more money for another router, it would be wiser to invest in a router that the promise of a long-term investment.

The investment value of the D-Link DIR-655 is high, because you get both speed and future compatibility (802.11n support) for a reasonable price. The DIR-655 is also backwards compatible with 802.11b and 802.11g, which provides you with financial breathing room and won’t force you to pay for unnecessary wireless card upgrades.
